I mean, this is a good sentiment and all, but really, you can’t pay your rent in newspapers or cats.
I think the message is is that possessions, be it newspapers, cats, or money, only have as much value as we, society, choose them to have. The idea is that money is a material thing like anything else and it makes no sense that we give it any more value than newspapers.
But still, it’s not exactly the strongest way to convey such a message.
